The LNER D49 is a class of 4-4-0 steam locomotives that were designed by Nigel Gresley and built for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) between 1927 and 1929. They were a development of the LNER C1 class, which had been designed by Gresley's predecessor, H.A. Ivatt.
The D49s were used primarily for passenger and express trains, and were capable of speeds of up to 90 miles per hour. They were designed with a high degree of superheating, which helped to improve their efficiency and reduce maintenance costs.
A total of 76 D49s were built, and they remained in service until the end of steam traction on British railways in the 1960s. Several examples have been preserved, including one that is currently operational on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
